ZED and HAZRDZ bring the South Bay’s stoner-rock and hardcore traditions together for one night at Guitar Wars
SAN JOSE, CA — San Jose has never needed permission to get heavy.
From Sleep, the San Jose band that became one of the defining names in stoner and doom metal, to underground cult favorites Operator Generator, the South Bay has a prominent place in the world of riff-driven heavy music. Now, decades later, a new generation of South Bay hardcore exploded onto the national scene. Through bands like San Jose’s Sunami and neighboring Santa Cruz’s Gulch, helping make the region a focal point of the modern American hardcore resurgence and be proud of the local contributions.
On Friday, November 21, two sides of the South Bay’s musical DNA will come together with ZED and HAZRDZ headlining Get Wrecked San Jose at Guitar Wars, joined by SÖNUS, Last Ditch Effort and Mercury Mind.
This is a bill built around a simple idea: San Jose is a heavy-music town. Always was and will be.
Get Wrecked San Jose celebrates these traditions under one roof.
Representing the riff-heavy side is ZED. Fresh off a headlining appearance at Austin Texas Ripplefest, ZED delivers a combination of stoner rock, hard rock, heavy blues and massive guitar riffs in a complete package.
On the other side is HAZRDZ, carrying the aggression, immediacy and DIY spirit of the booming South Bay hardcore scene.
These big players are joined by SÖNUS, Last Ditch Effort and Mercury Mind for a five-band bill that deliberately ignores the walls separating punk, hardcore, doom and heavy rock.
“San Jose has this incredible history of heavy music. Sleep came out of here. Operator Generator came out of here. Then another generation gave us bands like Sunami, with Gulch coming out of the greater South Bay scene. They sound completely different, but there’s a common DNA there — loud, heavy, independent music that doesn’t care about fitting neatly into a category. San Jose’s musical history is rich, but these genres often get overlooked. This is why we want Get Wrecked San Jose to celebrate everything HEAVY and remind everyone of the roots laid down here.”
